What are Universal Challenges?

Universal Challenges are scientific and/or innovative applications, experienced across industries and organizations, for those involved in:

  • Testing
  • Analysis
  • Research
  • Design
  • Manufacturing
Observation via high performance digital video systems results in refined products, improved performance, higher quality, and greater efficiency of items and services delivered.

Immersive Video

You may be familiar with Immersive Video even though you may have not heard of the name before. If you've seen Google Street Maps, been to a Real Estate web site that takes you on a virtual tour, or have seen any video games that involve either FPS (first person shooter) or 360 degree virtual environments then you have seen Immersive Video. We'll focus on physical rather than virtual environments (games or digital environments) as we explore applying digital video recording solutions for this particular technical capability.

As with many other uses for high performance digital recording, Immersive Video requires an extremely high degree of fault tolerance as well as absolute data reliability and integrity. Dropped video frames have a tremendous impact upon the user experience and potentially upon the usability of the content. This means that hardware must be optimized to guarantee the performance required for these applications.

Because of its dynamic environmental perspective and presentation there is a range of situations that can benefit from Immersive Video. Here are just a few:

  • Individuals are required to examine an incident or location but conditions prohibit them from being present on site. These days, more than ever, people are spread thin and are required to be in multiple places at the same time. Since that isn’t possible, data has to be collected so that information can be reviewed after the occurrence.
  • There’s also the possibility of safety or logistics where exposing multiple individuals to an incident or situation may not be reasonable or healthy.
  • Distance examination is required to save costs. Why send a team halfway around the world to see something that is changing, thus requiring ongoing data collection? It is often a better solution to establish a methodology to provide the necessary data back to those who need it for their examination.
  • Complex events require review – sometimes multiple times. Training staff that was not at an incident or even those who were can have incredible value. The 360° capability of Immersive Video provides situational awareness to observe events that, even for those present, more than likely were missed.
  • In today’s litigious society it’s critically important to document events. Immersive Video has tremendous value in providing additional information that can be used to avoid contentious litigation. Contractual confirmation is a primary example where video recorded data can have a direct financial benefit either through litigation avoidance or through compensation for redress.
  • Recorded data for archival purposes may mean everything from corporate activities, compliance, training, security, and much more.
  • Forensics is often associated with our criminal justice system (civil or criminal) however it extends to a wide array of corporate as well as national security arenas. Forensics may merely be determining the root cause of and to determine facts associated with an incident. By capturing an incident using a high performance recording system and leveraging an analytic tool-set one can more fully extract forensic value.
